Activating your debit card

If one of the following applies to you, you'll need to activate your new debit card before you can use it.

You've requested a replacement (personalised) debit card with a new PIN
You've received a completely new debit card and PIN

You can activate your debit card online in My ING or in the mobile banking app – it's easy and quick.

Please note: Before you can use contactless payments, you'll need to pay by entering your PIN or withdraw cash at least once.

Lost or forgotten PIN

You can easily and quickly request your PIN in the mobile banking app or in My ING. You'll then receive it in the post within 3 business days after your request. Please note you cannot change your PIN. If you'd like a new PIN, you can replace your current card and request a new PIN.

Blocking a lost or stolen debit card

Accepted Answer

If your card was lost or stolen, please block it immediately in My ING or the mobile banking app.

If money has been taken out of your account, please contact our Hotline immediately: +31 (0)20 22 888 00.

You can also call us from the app. That way, we'll know who's calling and will immediately have your details ready. It's quick, easy and safe.

Replacing a debit card

Accepted Answer

You can easily have your debit card replaced in My ING or the mobile banking app. Unfortunately, a submitted replacement request cannot be cancelled.

Changing a debit card's daily limit

If you're making a big purchase like a car or kitchen, you can use your debit card to pay for it – online or in person. Simply change the daily limit and it'll go into effect immediately.

Using your debit card abroad

Your ING debit card is set to global coverage by default. That means you can use your card as usual, even if you travel outside of Europe. It's easy and safe.

ING debit card payment brands (Maestro and V PAY)

Accepted Answer

Your ING debit card either has a Maestro or V PAY logo. Maestro is a Mastercard payment brand, and V PAY is a Visa payment brand. You can use both Maestro and V PAY debit cards to safely withdraw cash and pay in shops, restaurants, petrol stations and more – anywhere in the world.

In the overview below, you can see if the logo on a payment terminal or ATM indicates if it accepts Maestro and/or V PAY debit cards.

Contactless payments

You can pay contactless with all ING debit cards. Simply hold your card near a payment terminal to pay.

Please note: Before you can use contactless payments, you'll need to pay by entering your PIN or withdraw cash at least once.

Entered incorrect PIN three times

Accepted Answer

If this happens, your debit card will be blocked (temporarily). Here's what you can do.

If you've entered an incorrect PIN three times at an ATM or during a contactless payment, please wait 24 hours. Your card will then be automatically unblocked.

If you've entered an incorrect PIN three times at a payment terminal, use your debit card to withdraw cash or check your balance at an ATM. Doing so will unblock your card.

My debit card no longer works. What can I do?

If you Debit Card doesn't work check a few things before trying again or replace your Debit Card directly.

Is your Debit Card activated?
For a new debit card, you must first make a payment with a PIN to enable contactless payments.
Check the limit of your Debit Card and adjust it if necessary.
Check your available balance - make sure the logo of your Debit Card (V-pay / Maestro) is also present on the device you are trying to use.
Are you abroad? In some countries, there are deviations or restrictions.

When will I receive my requested Debit Card?

Haven't received the Debit Card (yet)? First, check if your correspondence address is correct and update it if necessary. Then replace the card free of charge. Blocking is not necessary. You can easily arrange it yourself. You will receive it at your address within 5 working days. Any new PIN code will be sent separately from the card to your correspondence address.

Can I cancel an (extra) Debit Card I am not using?

Cancelling your own Debit Card while remaining the account is not possible. We think it is important that our customers can identify themselves with their own Debit Card. This is how we keep banking safe. The card fulfils this important task. That is why it is not possible to cancel it.

If you have a joint account, you cannot cancel the 2nd Debit Card either. A joint account comes with 2 Debit Cards as standard. You paid for these through the package fee

New Visa and Mastercard debit cards

Here's what's new about the updated ING Mastercard and Visa debit cards.

These new cards offer more ways to pay. They also make it easier for you to pay online and pay in places that would previously only accept credit cards. You can also use them to withdraw money in more locations around the world.

When will I receive a new debit card from ING?

The Dutch Payments Association has announced that banks will start issuing new debit cards. At ING, we expect to issue these new debit cards over the course of 2024. You won't have to request a new card; you'll automatically receive it in the post when your current debit card expires. To prevent waste, however, we'll use up our current stock of debit cards before issuing the new type of card.

I've received an email, text or other type of message asking me to request and active this new type of debit card. How can I make sure ING is the sender?

ING will never send emails, text or other types of messages asking you to do this. These messages are always fake, and should you receive one, please forward it to valse-email@ing.nl. You can also contact ING by calling our Hotline: +31 (0)20 22 888 00.
